July Field Notes

Long, hot days that never end. And a project list to match.

Meals out on the patio on my new outdoor dining set. Breathing between bites. A quiet thrum of joy and peace.

Random adventures all by myself. Picnic breakfasts at the top of a hill. Picnic dinners at the edge of the river. Long walks. Hard climbs. Heavy backpack. Occasional heat exhaustion. Squeals of glee at the end of each journey. (I did it, I did it, I did it!)

Wearing swimsuits in public for the first time in decades. A newfound sense of acceptance of this body. (I am perfect just the way I am.)

Bowls of cherries every night. Juicy mangos, plump nectaries, a garden bursting with raspberries. Making jam for winter toast. Licking sticky spoons. And spring rolls at every lunch, because I can’t get enough.

Contrast. Memories of the past two summers, a string of heartbreak. And now this: more happiness than I have experienced in a very long time.
